The Crocodile Co. is vintage wooden wall art inspired by the character of an old leather merchant’s trade sign.

The Crocodile Co. was designed to feel like an old-established leather merchant’s trade sign — the sort of piece that might once have hung above the counter of a specialist workshop dealing in fine hides and handmade leather goods.

The sweeping period lettering gives the design its character immediately, while the long crocodile head creates a strong horizontal focal point across the centre of the sign. The shaped outer profile and restrained border treatment keep the piece substantial without competing with the illustration.

The crocodile itself carries much of the detail. Carved scale texture, the open jaw and individually defined teeth bring depth into the design, with deep green and aged brown tones sitting against the natural warmth of the timber. Small touches of lighter colour around the eye and teeth sharpen the detail without losing the deliberately aged trade-sign feel.

From across a room it reads as a bold piece of vintage commercial artwork. Up close, the carved detail, exposed timber grain and hand-finished colour become much more apparent.

Each colour has been hand-applied to work with the timber rather than hide it, leaving the grain visible through the finish and allowing the material to remain part of the design. The reverse is finished to the same standard as the front, and the piece is protected with a satin clear coat before being fitted ready to hang.
