Inspired by specialist fugu restaurants, this sign takes its cues from the bold, characterful shopfronts and traditional eating houses found in Osaka.

Fugu is the name for pufferfish — a delicacy closely associated with highly skilled preparation and specialist restaurants. These establishments are known for chefs trained specifically in preparing the fish, turning the experience into something that feels part dining, part theatre.

Our Fugu sign draws on that distinctive world rather than simply using generic imagery. The oversized pufferfish, strong lettering and traditional restaurant-sign composition give the piece the feeling of something discovered outside a long-established Osaka speciality restaurant.

Carved from timber and individually finished by hand, the machining, painted detail and visible grain give the sign a depth and character that printed artwork simply can’t reproduce.

A bold piece with an unusual story behind it — particularly suited to kitchens, dining spaces, bars or anywhere that deserves something a little unexpected.

Made properly. Front to back.

Made in our workshop from 19mm hardwood-veneered engineered timber, with hardwood veneer to both faces. Each colour is hand-applied to work with the timber rather than hide it. The reverse is fully finished, the piece is protected with a sprayed satin clear coat and it is supplied ready to hang with two D-rings and stainless-steel wire.
